For a same-day climb of Jeju’s Seongsan Ilchulbong, paid summit-trail admission is ₩5,000 for adults and ₩2,500 for youth/children, matching the VisitJeju tourism-center note on the VisitJeju Seongsan page. That page also separates the free coastal walk (e.g., Umutgae) from the paid summit stairs. Hours: winter Nov–Feb 06:00–18:00 (tickets until 17:00); spring/fall Mar–Apr & Sep–Oct 05:00–19:00 (tickets until 18:00); summer May–Aug 04:30–20:00 (tickets until 19:00). Closed on the first Monday each month (next day if that Monday is a holiday). Call 064-783-0959 before you go.
Seongsan Ilchulbong (“Sunrise Peak”) rises from the sea at the eastern tip of Jeju Island, and it is one of the island’s signature sights. A visit is simple once you understand two things: the coastal walk around the base is free, while the stairs to the crater rim are paid; and hours shift by season, with ticket sales ending an hour before closing. This guide explains fees, discounts, seasonal hours, transport and parking, and how to plan a half or full day around the peak.

How much is admission?
Adults ₩5,000 / youth·children ₩2,500 for the paid summit course. Discounts and exemptions (Jeju residents, national merit recipients, and a full exemption for Jeju Nowda digital tourist pass Level 2 and above) appear on VisitJeju, but the ticket window rules on the day. The free coastal sections need no ticket; the crater viewpoint requires the paid trail.
| Category | Fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (summit) | ₩5,000 | VisitJeju / info center |
| Youth / child | ₩2,500 | Same |

Paid vs free paths
VisitJeju says the paid climb usually takes about 30–40 minutes. Free paths are gentler for cliff-and-sea views without the crater rim. If your energy is limited on the day, walk the free coastal section first and climb to the summit only if you still feel up to it.

What are the opening hours?
Nov–Feb 06:00–18:00 (tickets to 17:00); Mar–Apr & Sep–Oct 05:00–19:00 (tickets to 18:00); May–Aug 04:30–20:00 (tickets to 19:00). First Monday monthly is closed (shifted if holiday). Tickets stop one hour before closing, so if you are chasing sunrise or sunset, move your entry time earlier rather than later. Food carry-in is prohibited per VisitJeju; for water, follow the on-site rules.
Sunrise climbs
Special New Year slots may need separate booking — VisitJeju’s Q&A-style guidance notes that the January 1 dawn climb uses reservations, while at other times you enter with a normal ticket within the posted hours. Same-day notices and a phone call (064-783-0959) are the final word.
Parking and transport
Lots near the gate mix public and private operators; VisitJeju does not publish one fixed parking price here, so follow on-site boards. Enter “Seongsan Ilchulbong” or 284-12 Ilchul-ro into your navigation app and check the rate board or attendant when you arrive. Lots often fill, with queues, in peak season and around sunrise. Intercity and city buses connect Jeju Airport, Jeju City and Seogwipo with Seongsan, Goseong and Seongsan Port, but routes and frequencies change often—use Jeju bus info or live apps. If you continue to Udo, check the passenger ferry timetable at Seongsan Port separately.
| Leg | Mode | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Airport/city → Seongsan | Bus / taxi / rental | Apps |
| To trailhead | Short walk | Signs |
| Parking | Nearby lots | Rate board |

Suggested day plan
Morning paid summit → lunch in Seongsan (or nearby Ojo-ri and Goseong) → afternoon free Umutgae walk or Seongsan Port/Udo. From the top, VisitJeju says you can take in a crater about 600 m across along with Udo, Seongsan village and the sea. The peak is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and Natural Monument No. 420—stay on paths; no drone or crater entry. In winter, tickets end at 17:00, so late arrivals may miss the summit.
If the climb feels daunting, reverse the order: walk the free coast first and take the summit stairs when the sun is higher. On windy days the summit can feel much colder than the car park, so pack a windbreaker. The peak also adjoins Jeju Olle Trail Route 1, and “peak + coast” alone is enough to fill a day. If you want to watch the light on the peak from outside in the evening, compare the ticket cut-off with the sunset time.
On budget alone, a visit is ₩5,000 adult admission plus transport and food. If you qualify for the Nowda exemption, check in advance how to obtain and show the pass.
Sample timing
- Morning: tickets + summit round-trip 1.5–2 h
- Lunch in Seongsan-eup
- Afternoon: coastal path or Udo
- Buffer 40–60 min for return transport

A little geology before you climb
Seongsan Ilchulbong is a tuff cone built up by a hydrovolcanic eruption, which is why the view down from the top shows layer upon layer of rock and cliff. VisitJeju explains that waves eroded the coastal deposits into steep cliffs, and that the peak began as a volcanic island separate from Jeju before sand and gravel built up and joined it to the mainland. If there is an exhibition hall open, a short look at the geology and World Heritage panels adds little time to your route. On very windy days keep your time at the summit short and come down to the Umutgae side to sort your photos. In peak season and on holidays, ticket queues and congestion on the stairs overlap, so the opening hour or a weekday morning is the best choice.
FAQ
Q. Is the free coastal walk enough? A. Yes for cliff/sea views. The crater overlook needs the paid trail.
Q. First Monday is a public holiday? A. Closure moves to the next day per VisitJeju—still call ahead.
Q. Can I bring food? A. VisitJeju lists a food carry-in ban.
Q. Strollers to the summit? A. Long stairs make strollers impractical; use free coastal/exhibition areas.
