Museum SAN is open from 10:00 to 18:00, the ticket office stops selling at 17:00, and the museum is closed every Monday. A Basic ticket costs 23,000 won for adults and 15,000 won for students in grades 1 to 12, while the all-inclusive Signature ticket costs 59,000 won and 47,000 won. If you do not drive, the Wonju City Tour Bus links Wonju, Manjong and Seowonju stations to the museum for 5,000 won a day, and showing that bus ticket gets you 20% off admission.
All figures below are per Wonju City tourism info and VisitKorea, so please check the official website before visiting. The museum’s own site is the Museum SAN official website.
What is Museum SAN, and where exactly is it?
Museum SAN is a museum set in the mountains of Jijeong-myeon, Wonju, in Gangwon Province, designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando and opened in May 2013. The name stands for Space, Art and Nature. For questions, the phone number is +82-33-730-9000 (033-730-9000 inside Korea).
What makes the place different from a typical city museum is that the building and the gardens are designed as one continuous walk. Ando used exposed concrete, stone, glass and water in his familiar minimalist style, so the path between the halls matters as much as what hangs on the walls. Wonju City describes the museum’s theme as paper and analog culture, with the slogan “Disconnect to connect”, and notes that it was named among Korea’s 100 must-visit tourist spots for 2019–2020.
Because the museum sits outside the city center, the address is the most useful thing to save before you leave. In Korean it reads 강원특별자치도 원주시 지정면 오크밸리2길 260, and in English it is 260 Oak Valley 2-gil, Jijeong-myeon, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do. Taxi drivers and Korean map apps respond far better to the Korean line, so keep a screenshot of it on your phone. If you enjoy wandering between small galleries rather than following a single designed route, our Heyri Art Village guide covers a very different kind of art day near Seoul.

How much are Museum SAN tickets, and which one should you buy?
For most first-time visitors the Basic ticket is enough: 23,000 won for adults and 15,000 won for students. It covers the outdoor gardens, the Paper Museum and the art galleries, which takes about one hour. The higher tiers simply add separately run halls, so you only need them if a specific hall is the reason for your trip.
| Ticket | What it includes | Adult | Student (grades 1–12) | Child | Infant |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Outdoor gardens + Paper Museum + galleries (about 1 hour) | 23,000 | 15,000 | 5,000 | Free |
| James Turrell | Basic + James Turrell Hall | 39,000 | 29,000 | 5,000 (15:00 only) | Free |

Choosing between the add-on halls
The James Turrell Hall shows work by James Turrell, an artist of the light-and-space movement, and VisitKorea describes the Meditation Hall, near the Stone Garden, as a room of aroma scents and singing-bowl sounds with curved windows framing the landscape. Each of these alone costs 39,000 won for adults. If you want both, Special 1 at 46,000 won is clearly cheaper than buying them one at a time. The Gormley ticket (35,000 won) adds the GROUND Antony Gormley Hall, and the Signature ticket at 59,000 won is the one to pick only if you are sure you want all three halls in a single visit.
These halls run separately from the main galleries, and Wonju City’s page does not list their session times or capacity. Before you commit to an add-on, open the reservation menu on the official website and check whether a hall works on timed sessions and how booking is handled. That small step avoids arriving with a ticket you cannot use at the time you hoped.
Visiting with children
Young children can enter on a Basic ticket for 5,000 won. The James Turrell ticket admits children only at the 15:00 session, and the Gormley ticket only at 16:15. The Meditation ticket, the three Special tickets and the Signature ticket do not admit children or infants at all. For families, the simplest plan is a Basic ticket for everyone; if the Turrell hall is a must, build the day around the 15:00 slot.
What is the walking route, and how long does a visit take?
The museum is laid out as one straight line along a path, so the order you walk is the order you see things. You start at the Welcome Center and pass the lawn parking lot, the Flower Garden, the Water Garden, the Main Building, the Meditation Hall and the Stone Garden, ending at the James Turrell Hall. Only the Basic route has an official time estimate, about one hour.

Inside the Main Building
The Main Building is made of four wings that link square, triangular and circular spaces. VisitKorea explains this as Ando’s way of connecting land, sky and people. Inside is a Cafe Terrace with a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, which makes a natural pause halfway through the walk. Menus and prices change, so we leave those to the museum.
Why timing matters at the far end
Because the Meditation Hall, the Stone Garden and the James Turrell Hall all sit at the back of the route, anyone holding an add-on ticket should not linger too long in the front gardens. Give yourself enough time to reach the far end before any session you plan to join. With ticket sales ending at 17:00, arriving by mid-afternoon at the latest keeps the whole route comfortable.

How do you get to Museum SAN without a car?
The easiest car-free option is the circular Wonju City Tour Bus, which stops at Wonju Station, Wonju Bus Terminal, Manjong Station and Seowonju Station before reaching the museum. Only the first two runs, arriving at 10:31 and 11:51, leave you real time to look around. A one-day pass costs 5,000 won for adults.

Catching the right bus
According to the Wonju City Tour Bus timetable, run 1 leaves Wonju Station at 9:20, Wonju Bus Terminal at 9:29, Manjong Station at 9:38 and Seowonju Station at 9:50, arriving at Museum SAN at 10:31, just after opening. Run 2 leaves Wonju Station at 10:40, the terminal at 10:49, Manjong at 10:58 and Seowonju at 11:10, arriving at 11:51. Run 3 arrives at 16:51, only minutes before the 17:00 ticket cutoff, and run 4 arrives at 18:11, after the museum has closed. In practice, plan on run 1 or run 2.
All three stations are on the route, so whichever one your train reaches, you can join the bus there. Train and intercity bus times and fares from Seoul are not listed by Wonju City, so check Korail or the bus operators directly. If you are planning several rail trips, our Korail Pass guide explains the pass for foreign visitors.
For the trip back, the tourist-site loop stops at Museum SAN at 13:13 and 14:43 and reaches Wonju Station at 15:40 and 17:00. The circular runs also pass Seowonju Station (city-bound) at 11:00, 12:20, 17:20 and 18:40, and the stop opposite Wonju Bus Terminal at 11:23, 12:43, 17:43 and 19:03.
Paying for the bus: cash or card, no transit cards
A one-day pass costs 5,000 won for adults and 3,000 won for teenagers and children aged 36 months or older; disabled passengers, military personnel and seniors also pay 3,000 won. Children under 36 months ride free, one per accompanying adult. A two-day pass is 8,000 won for adults and 5,000 won for the other groups. The bus is hop-on hop-off and runs six times a day.
There is no advance booking: you pay the driver in cash or by card when you board. Note that T-money style transit cards are not accepted on this bus. Keep your paper ticket for the whole day, since the driver can refuse boarding if you cannot show it.
Turning the bus ticket into a 20% discount
Wonju City states that tour bus ticket holders get 20% off Museum SAN admission. Simply show your bus ticket at the museum ticket office. Because the discount applies to the admission price, it is worth more on the higher tiers, which makes the bus a good value even before you count the transport itself.
Can you visit on a Monday, and is there parking?
No regular Monday visit is possible: the museum is closed every Monday, and the City Tour Bus does not run on Mondays either. That means both drivers and bus riders should plan for Tuesday to Sunday. Whether the museum opens when a Monday is a public holiday is something to check on the official website.
The bus runs on a Monday that is a public holiday, but it also stops on certain fixed days such as the main Chuseok and Seollal holidays, so look at Wonju City’s notice if your trip falls on a festival. Parking is available, and the lawn parking lot is right at the start of the route. For fees and the number of spaces, follow the museum’s official guidance. Drivers can simply enter the Korean address into a navigation app.
A simple Tuesday-to-Sunday plan
Pick any day from Tuesday to Sunday and board run 1 at Wonju or Manjong Station in the morning. You arrive at 10:31, walk the Basic route in about an hour, and then fit in any add-on hall you booked. Catch the 13:13 or 14:43 bus back toward Wonju Station, and you still have the afternoon free for the rest of your trip.
